At TruHealing Baltimore, one of the addiction treatment therapies we offer to clients is recreational therapy. When clients aren’t at our facility, they have the choice to explore numerous therapeutic activities. These activities include trips to local attractions, such as the Baltimore Museum of Art, as well as outdoor activities, such as hiking at Patapsco Valley State Park.

These trips have a social, spiritual, and cultural focus. By allowing groups to explore local museums, art galleries, or historical sites, they can relate these trips to exploring the self. Other therapeutic recreational activities include natural therapies like hikes and nature walks, which are proven treatments that can ease stress and boost recovery. Clients will also have the opportunity to go on outings with peer groups. By taking a break from the intense aspect of recovery, we can learn to enjoy ourselves.

How Recreational Therapy Can Help in Recovery

Women smiling at the cameraA recreation therapy program is an experiential therapy, meaning it is based on individuals having a particular experience in the world. Experiential therapies have recently been discovered to have significant impacts on people over time.

People learn in all kinds of ways. When individuals have experienced chronic addiction to drugs or alcohol, their mind and body become used to using or drinking at certain times or as a reaction to specific triggers. Aside from the biological effects of dependency, addiction creates habits, associations, and muscle memory. In recovery, individuals need to unlearn those habits. One of the best ways to unlearn unhealthy habits and replace them with positive ones is recreational therapy.

Recreational therapy can help individuals:

  • Develop social skills
  • Nurture their sense of well-being and be in a better mood
  • Gives ways to augment aspects of work and life
  • Have a better quality of life
  • Strengthen both the body and the mind
  • Develop better motor skills

Recreational therapy can help individuals remember the things that they used to enjoy doing. It can inspire them to go out and join in soccer pick up games, find a tennis partner, or get to that hiking meet-up group. After treatment, these habits can reduce exposure to relapse triggers and help individuals make a lasting recovery. A recreational therapy program is about learning new and old skills to help clients cope with cravings. It is also a way for individuals to access memories and feelings they may not be able to in talk therapy sessions.

Types of Therapeutic Recreation

A recreational therapy program is just that, recreation. But it isn’t simply relaxing or having fun. Recreational therapy acts as a small piece of an overall therapy program. It’s designed to give individuals struggling with substance use disorder a means to release tensions, develop new interests that aren’t associated with drugs or alcohol, learn new skills and hobbies, and lay the foundations for an active, healthy life after treatment. There are numerous events that recreational therapy may involve, such as:

  • Boating
  • Soccer, kickball, other team sports
  • Art
  • Music
  • Animal therapy
  • Yoga
  • Dance
  • Community outings

At TruHealing Baltimore, clients participate in activities like these with others from the program, those in their group therapy sessions and other sessions. In this way, clients can re-socialize and build interpersonal bonds through shared interests and experiences.

Stacy Decker
Director of Operations

I joined the team at TruHealing Hagerstown in 2020. Before starting my current position, I worked as an administrator in outpatient surgical care, and then joined an ambulatory surgery center development company as Regional Director.  I enjoy using my medical background and business knowledge—in conjunction with my personal experiences in recovery—to encourage and support clients seeking treatment.

Abstinence and recovery are an integral part of my life. Being able to help other people who are suffering with a substance use disorder has been a blessing. TruHealing Hagerstown is the only inpatient facility in our community to help people suffering with substance use disorders. It’s incredibly rewarding to give back to my community.

As we continue to grow Amatus Health, the need to stay competitive and differentiate ourselves in unique ways is crucial. Building creative approaches to reach more people will take our company to new heights. This is why I am pleased to announce that we are officially rebranding. Our new national name, TruHealing Addiction & Mental Health Treatment, will eventually replace Amatus Recovery Centers.

You may be asking, “Why are we doing this?” This new name will give us national uniformity and help brand ourselves as a whole, which will be done in phases. You will still see our existing facility names co-branded with TruHealing for the time being.

Healing is what we do. Everyone who comes through our doors is in a moment of profound struggle in their lives. We support them through a life-changing process of healing and recovery, and they leave our facilities changed. This new name is a representation of that process. As mentioned above, it also allows us to have a national brand, which will make us a recognizable name in the addiction and mental health field.

In summation, these changes present an excellent opportunity for our organization to develop our mission, vision, and purpose. I look forward to prosperous growth as we head in a new and positive direction.

Sincerely,
